Ant McPartlin might seem self-assured in front
of the cameras, but he admits, 'when I feel a
little bit bigger, I don't feel very confident. And
you are reminded of that insecurity on a weekly
basis when you do a live television series'.
So before the first Pop Idol series hit the
screens (and long before Gareth Gates and Will
Young became household names), Ant and his
best friend Dec signed up for the Bodydoctor.
'I never really trained properly before,' he says.
'I went to the gym and was fairly active. I could
run around a bit, but my strength wasn't great.
I wanted to be fitter and feel better.'
Ant adds: 'I wanted to tone up, but I didn't
want to get loads of muscles. I just wanted to
be confident when my shirt came off!'
For six weeks he stuck rigidly to the programme,
adopting the nutrition plan as well. 'You find
what food suits you,' he says. 'I used to get
lethargic after carbohydrates, so I now eat much
more protein. I just don't feel as stuffed and
bloated afterwards.' The first real session was
'a massive uphill struggle and six weeks seemed
a lifetime ahead' but within four weeks 'almost
all my excess weight came off. I would say it
was a good stone and a half. I was getting into
old jeans and I had to buy myself new shirts.
The size went down from a large to a medium.'
There was another unexpected benefit. 'I used to
have a bad back, and I found the ab-flow really
hurt my lower back at first. So we wouldn't do a
lot, but then we added a little bit more,' says
Ant. 'It turned out that I had no real stomach
strength and my back was being forced to
compensate. Now my stomach is stronger and
I have no back troubles. I didn't think that I
would get anything like that out of the
programme.'
Ant, who describes his lifestyle as 'hectic,' says
he has learned to incorporate the programme
into his schedule. 'I am much more aware of my
fitness levels,' he says. 'You go to the gym and
you feel better, but when you stop going you
start feeling run down.You hear of all those
ridiculous diets, like only eat green food for six
days, but, at the end of the day, you have got to
exercise. It is the easiest and simplest way to
lose weight and get fit.'

Dec Donnelly was delighted by the reaction of
his tailor when he went along for a suit fitting.
'I had lost 3 in off my waist. My tailor said,
"My God, what has happened?" I told him that
I'd been to the Bodydoctor. I was getting into
jeans I hadn't worn for years.'
Dec's waist was not the only visible difference.
'People told me I had lost a lot of weight, and
my eyes were more sparkly. I just looked fresh.
I was sleeping better,' he says. Even the football
team he played with every weekend noticed a
change. 'I used to be exhausted during the last
10 to 15 minutes, but now I could have kept
going for another half an hour,' Dec explains.
'I was getting forward much more, and getting
into the box.'
Like so many people, Dec used to promise
himself every New Year that he would get fit.
'Every January I would go in and run for half
an hour on a treadmill because that seemed a
popular thing to do, then I'd lift some weights
and do a few sit ups.The Bodydoctor Fitness
Programme actually taught me how to exercise.'
He adds: 'I think David thought we were a bit
soft. I was not hugely obese, but I was squidgy
and a bit soft. I knew that I wanted toned
muscles, because I had heard that phrase on the
telly.With the Bodydoctor, I actually burned fat
and toned muscle. I don't know how I did it, but
it certainly happened.' Dec is such a fan that he
has encouraged both brothers and his girlfriend
to have a go.
Dec stuck rigidly to the nutrition plan for the
first six weeks 'although I still partook of
alcohol,' but he has since adapted it. 'I don't
drink as much beer as I used to. I drink more
wine, and I kind of stay off bread,' he explains.
'You have to be able to have a life as well. But
this programme has taught me how to exercise.
It is the best thing, fitness-wise, that I have
ever done.'

David Marshall is a lifelong West Ham fan, so it
is perhaps not surprising that he offered his
services to Harry Redknapp when he was
manager of the team. 'The lads needed
strengthening,' recalls Harry. 'They lacked upper
body strength. It wasn't the case that they
needed to build muscle mass, but they did need
to develop strength. David knew how to do that.
He knew how to get the best out of the players
and coincidentally during his time there the team
climbed from twentieth position to sixth.'
Harry felt that David 'talks a language
everybody understands. He managed to get the
team working hard, and really improved their
level of fitness.They felt much better.'
David did not work with all the players, but
trained an impressive selection, including Rio
Ferdinand, Joe Cole,Trevor Sinclair and Frank
Lampard. 'All of them played for England,'
recalls Harry. 'I certainly think that David
improved their fitness levels a great deal.'
But Harry didn't try out the Bodydoctor Fitness
Programme. 'No, I didn't. I think I am too old.
However, Roger Cross - who was my first team
coach and is still at West Ham - said that David
was absolutely in a different class and it was the
best training he'd come across in 25 years. I'd
recommend him without a doubt. He really is
excellent.'

Rio Ferdinand is full of praise for David's
methods. He started training with David six
weeks before establishing himself as an England
regular. 'I was fit before, but David took me
to the next level,' he says. 'I am stronger on the
pitch and have noticed a great improvement
in my playing since training with him. It had
definitely enhanced my football and if it makes
you look better in the mirror - which it has -
then that's an added bonus.'
Rio was 20 when he first started training with
David Marshall. He was one of the younger
members of West Ham and, like so many other
football players, had neglected the need for
weight training. 'I always thought that if you did
weight training, then you would put on weight
and wouldn't be able to run,' he recalls. 'I
thought I would get too bulky. But I was at a
stage in my career when I really needed to add
to my game.'
When David arrived to spice up the training
programme for the team, Rio was impressed.
'He was very enthusiastic. He came and chatted
and he seemed knowledgeable and experienced.
He pointed out that sprinters do weight training,
and that they're not all big and muscular. I just
didn't know how to train with weights.'
Rio began to adopt the Bodydoctor Fitness
Programme. 'After four to five weeks, I felt a
lot stronger. I felt different,' he recalls. 'I was
always able to run for long periods, but I can
now produce some explosive bursts. It made a
definite difference.'
'Trevor Sinclair, Jermaine Defoe and I - we
all benefited from training with David.We
incorporated his sessions into our own workouts.
It enhanced us as footballers - and we have all
played for England at some level!'
Now at Manchester United, Rio still does the
programme two or three times a week. 'It
obviously depends on the games. Everybody has
their own routine to do, and I now have mine!'
Since training with David, Ferdinand has become
an England regular and the bedrock of their
defence, while other players who followed the
programme - such as Trevor Sinclair, Michael
Carrick, Joe Cole and Frank Lampard - are now
also regulars in the squad.

Nicky Clarke has known David Marshall for
many years. He first started training with him
when Marshall had a gym in his house. 'I was
fairly gym orientated,' he recalls. 'I had read all
about different types of exercise, so David wasn't
explaining his programme to somebody who
didn't understand.'
The programme has evolved over the years.
'He had perfected a simple yet sophisticated
approach. He applies the same method to
everybody, but just changes the intensity and
weights.There are a lot of similarities between
the way I work when I cut hair. I use the same
method of sectioning for different types of
hairstyles. A lot of people found that incredibly
difficult to grasp.
'David was unconventional, because he said "do
one set of 25 repetitions," when everyone else
was saying, "do three sets." I did think it went
against everything I had read. He insisted on no
real rest period, not hitting the same muscle
part often, and equalizing each muscle with an
opposite number. But there was no kind of pain
threshold 24 hours later.'
Nicky began exercising 'not because I wanted to
lose weight, but if I don't do anything then I can
quite easily add three quarters of a stone and it
is not a nice three quarters of a stone!' But he
wanted to 'lose a percentage of body fat.'
'David was very strict about doing the exercises
properly. He would drop my weights down in
order to make sure that I did them correctly. He
is quite particular about the safety aspect and
the programme is obviously well thought out.'
Nicky got results 'relatively immediately.'Today
he finds it difficult to pop into David's Primrose
Hill gym, but takes his manual along to his local
one. 'I am quite strict about doing it two or three
times a week. Once I saw somebody who was
quite clearly following David's programme at my
local gym. If I don't have time for a full workout,
then I will do all the exercises without the
aerobics. I can do them in half an hour - I know
it will be a tough half-hour, but that I will be in
fairly decent shape afterwards.'
Heather Clark who is an A & E hospital consultant and Sports Medicine doctor to QPR football club works out at David Marshall's private gym in Primrose Hill North London. She told us "people don't realise how important it is to exercise. David's program is so good because it's easy to follow, anyone can do it and get results. Many people don't realise that, in the battle against heart disease, fitness is as important as giving up smoking. Alain Kemeny owner of a restaurant in Hampstead went from a 44in waist to 34in in 15 weeks. His waist now measures 30in. He says " I follow the exact routine. It's not stressful and I never feel sore. I've followed the nutritional advice and have cut out dairy products and sugar. I eat carbs before exercise and protein after. I drink lots of water. ". He exercises 3 times a week.
Rachel Davis desperate to be slim for her wedding later this year bought the Bodydoctor programme: "I just followed it to the letter doing exactly what was stated" she says. In ten weeks she lost 36lbs and is down from dress size 24 to dress size 14 and still losing. The bonus is that her asthma has also disappeared.
Rachel Weisz "When I needed to get in shape for a film he took me safely down from a size 12 to size 8 in just six weeks. "David's is the only form of exercise I've ever been able to stick to," she says. "His programme has made me amazingly fit and much smaller."

Suzanne Guest; "I was getting married and though I wasn't that big - size 14 - I kept moaning about my body and really wanted to get fit. I couldn't bear going on one of those boring, restrictive diets again." "I started the course in March and by my wedding day in August, I was a perfect size 10."
Nicky Clarke, the celebrity hairdresser, tries to squeeze in five early-morning sessions a week with Marshall. "I started putting on fat once I hit 30," he says. "Now I'm 40, he's redefined my shape. He's aggressive in the nicest way and he won't allow me to let up."
Within two or three weeks, my whole body changed after working out with
Bodydoctor. I've got a lot thinner. I've always been thin, but now I'm
even thinner, and how I've always wanted to be. I used to be a dancer, so I
do have a good body, but now David's made it really good. I thought I could
never shift any more weight from my thighs and hips, they were always my
problem areas, and I was resigned to that, but they've totally gone away. I
knew about David from Rachel Weiss, who had fantastic results. I saw her
body transformed over night. It's not an exaggeration to say that my whole
body changed too in the same way that Rachel's did. I'm just so much
leaner, but I still have all my muscles, so I look healthy too, and really
fit. I've come down two dress sizes.
From an American 8/10 to a 4/6 which
is incredible. In the past I've hated working out, with all those reps, but
David does it in a fun way, you can feel each muscle being worked in each
exercise. You actually feel the results as you're training. I really
enjoyed working out for the first time in my life. If Rachel and I hadn't
had the training with David, we could never done the fight scene in the
movie. We worked on the fight scene over three days, and we both had the
stamina to do that, thanks to David. I've danced my whole life and thought
I was fit, but without David, I could never have pulled that off. We were
pushed beyond physical human limits. He's fantastic. If I don't see him, I
miss it. He doesn't talk bullshit,(?!) he just pushes you to where you
have to go. He gets you out of negative moods, by working mind and body at
same time. He makes you feel like you're the best. It's a psychological
thing. He makes you feel as good as he knows you are!
Patricia Velasquez
Jasper and I came straight to David when we knew we needed to increase our
body fitness levels and stamina. I was dancing since I was three, and being
a professional dancer, I thought I was as fit as anyone could be. But
David's shown pushed me beyond that, I've achieved a body shape I never
thought I could get. He's just so good at motivating me, he even makes you
laugh while he's pushing you really hard. He makes you want to prove
yourself. I've noticed a significant change in my body, after just a few
sessions. I've always been slim and toned, but did have a bit of a wobble
around the edges. Now my stomach is really toned, and I feel confident in a
bikini. The back of my legs are really toned, as are my arms, and I've got
a tighter bum! I was very scared of building too much muscle but that hasn't
happened at all, overall my body has got smaller to the ey.e. I look so much
better in all the right places. I was a size twelve before and happy with
that. Now I'm a ten and really happy. He energises me far more than he
wears me out. He's taught me some yoga stretches, great stomach exercises
and the boxing is fun. I used to try to do 1000 sit ups a day, with him I
do less, but they're more intense, and there's much more of a result. I
just do 25 exercises for each part of the stomach, and it's just so much
more effective, than hundreds of the same sit ups. The boys in the band are
very impressed with my new shape. The excess weight on my stomach and hips
has totally disappeared.
In my dancing, I sustained a few injuries, my ankle went but David's built
up my strength and it's back to normal. David makes it fun, he gives us all
nicknames. He also puts us on a diet which complements the exercise. We've
asked him if we can come back and train again.
Faye Tozer - Steps
I used to be very fit, but lately I started getting a belly. Then I was
asked to do this celebrity run, and I decided to come straight to the
bodydoctor. In five weeks, I've looked so much better. I used to have suck
in my belly, now I don't. It's completely toned.I've got a six pack for the
first time ever. I find now I need less sleep, got more energy, I'm more
focused. I used to really know it the day after a night of drinking, now I
don't even have hangovers. I follow David's bible religiously when I'm
training in another gym. That's another great thing about him, he trains
you how to work out properly wherever you are in the world. I never ran at
school, and found exercise quite daunting. I had a knee injury at 17, and
that really put me off all exercise.
This was a challenge for me, but it's
worked because David works with the body and not against it. I can honestly
say he can work me really hard and afterwards I'll have no pain,. My legs
are really hard, and I've now got a black man's arse. He puts you through
hell for two hours, but afterwards instead of feeling exhausted, you feel
energised and ready for anything. I've become faster, fitter and so full of
stamina. I've always hated gyms but wanted to get fit without looking like
a bodybuilder. Now I love exercise, and I don't look like a bodybuilder.
I've lost two kilos. I've got really toned muscles and there is no sign of
a belly. I feel like I'm wearing an invisible bodydoctor corset. Everything
is kept in, even when I'm relaxing. I now feel so much more confident in
myself because I know I'm so fit. David has given me the perfect fit body.
He's a personal fitness genius. They say, no pain, no gain. But with him
it's all gain, and no pain. That has to be unique in fitness. It's also
great for Faye and I that we can look so good for each other.
David motivates us and we motivate each other. H'es a nutter, but he keeps
us laughing. The amount of bollocks he can talk in two hours is almost as
amazing as his techniques!
