I have written about how women are clearly the stronger sex. They live longer than men and have stronger immune systems especially against parasites.
Now some more news for the 'weaker sex'. Sperm quality decreases as we get older. And by 'older' I mean from 35 onwards. Scientists have shown that we (I mean men) become gradually less fertile as we get older. This is on top of the fact that sperm production in general has dropped by about 25% in the last century which is one of the most important subjects that hardly anybody talks about these days.
Still, if you are male, there is no reason to be disconcerted. Our biological clock allows many of us to continue being fertile well beyond 70 and we should be grateful for this.
For the past few decades researchers, especially those of the feminist persuasion, concluded that while marriage was definitely good for men, it wasn't so good for women. This 'fact' worked its way into common folk lore, but now a strong attempt at refuting this has been published. An Australian (sic) study of more than 10 000 people (that's a significant sample) has shown that marriage is good for the physical and mental well-being of both men and women. Let's give a cheer for tradition and a raspberry for those who chose to attack marriage. Listen to this!
The men in white coats in Melbourne have shown:
- 25% of single people are miserable but only 13% of married people
- the women with the fewest mental problems are those who are married, have
children and a job! (one could say that they don't have time for mental
problems)
- married men and women are less likely to suffer from heart disease, ulcers
and a host of other problems compared to single people.
Maybe this just means that Australian men are the best lovers and most considerate husbands but somehow I don't think so! I think it shows that when men and women live with each other, it's healthy for both sexes. And the study doesn't even mention the most important advantage of being married - access to regular sex. (if you are lucky) I was so heartened by this study that I composed a poem.
It's sad
And bad
To disparage
Marriage.
It's official. Pets are good for children. A Dutch study has clearly shown that 'vulnerable' children from 3 to 18 who have a pet feel better about themselves and are more emotionally balanced than those who don't own a pet. The researchers think that this is due to the unconditional love that certain animals can give to children. Sounds logical, but I can't help thinking of James Bond's arch enemy who was always stroking a cat that obviously doted on him!
Feeling heartbroken? Been dumped by somebody you really liked? Shell-shocked by a messy divorce? Well there are lots of things you can do and one of them is take the homeopathic remedy IGNATIA 6 one tablet three times a day for a while. But if your marriage is going through a difficult patch, try to mend it. It's not only the company, the friendship, the regular sex, the effect on the kids that's at stake - it 's the physical and mental well-being of both of you!
