Diagnosis may be difficult before visible signs of the disease appear. Once a rash and blisters do appear, however, the appearance of the rash will usually be sufficient for making a diagnosis in combination with the patient's medical history. If the doctor is unsure, a scrape from the blisters can help identify the virus. A blood sample can also be used to confirm the initial diagnosis.
