People who request HIV testing will normally be counselled regarding the implications of having a test and a possible HIV-positive result. It should be noted that a patient might not have a positive result until approximately three months following suspected exposure to the virus. The clinic that offers the test will normally want to make arrangement to see the patient to tell them the result. Further counselling and help will be offered at that time. There are many groups which have been set up to give support and advice to patients who have just been, or are coming to terms with a diagnosis of HIV or AIDS. Partners of people diagnosed with HIV may also require counselling and help in adjusting to the lifestyle changes that are likely to be necessary.
