Illness Care - Hypotension

Definition

Hypotension (Low blood pressure) is a term for blood pressure that is abnormally or dangerously low. A low blood pressure is usually associated with health, although a very low blood pressure may signify diseased states, especially among the elderly. To better understand the association between blood pressure and health, it is essential to know what a blood pressure reading signifies. Blood pressure is a rough estimate of the contractility of heart muscle and elasticity of vessel walls. A blood pressure reading of 120/80 is considered to be normal in the general population.

The complications of high blood pressure, or hypertension, have been extensively studied and documented. In contrast, low blood pressure remains relatively under-investigated. A low blood pressure reading of 100/60 is associated with a longer life span. Furthermore, sick people benefit from lower blood pressure readings. However, too much of a good thing can be detrimental. In this case, very low blood pressure compromises blood flow to the brain and other vital organs. This occurs as a consequence of dehydration or misuse of anti-hypertensives. Common complaints would be dizziness and nausea. Low blood pressure of 110/70 is a sign of health, except in instances when it falls precipitously.
