Treatment
IBS is often a chronic condition, which means that although it can get better, it can't be completely cured. Treatment of irritable bowel syndrome often focuses on treating the symptoms and preventing flare-ups. In the causes section we saw that diet and emotional stress can trigger IBS so naturally management of these areas can be beneficial.
Diet: Many patients are helped by change in diet. Where constipation is a feature, then an increase in the fibre in the diet together with increasing the amount of clear fluids taken is often helpful. But be careful - too much fibre can cause bloating and worsen symptoms. Patients should drink lots of water, preferably 3 litres a day. Where diarrhoea is a feature then a reduction in the fibre in the diet may be helpful.
Avoid or limit your consumption of gas producing foods such as beans, onions, broccoli, cabbage, or any other foods that you have identified which aggravate your IBS symptoms. Coffee and milk are frequent offenders. Alcohol intake should be limited.
Try to slow down and enjoy your food at mealtimes. Eating rapidly and chewing gum may lead to air swallowing and symptoms of abdominal distention and pain. Drinking carbonated drinks can introduce gas into the intestines and cause abdominal pain. Eating smaller meals during the day rather than large meals may also decrease the symptoms Remember that physical activity and exercise can improve digestion.
Stress: Try to reduce the number of stressful situations in your life. You might like to experiment with some of the different relaxation techniques, such as meditation. Anything that helps you relax should be helpful, such as participating in regular exercise, a hobby you enjoy, or even attending counselling sessions to help control the stressful situations in your life.
Identify triggers; Keep a record of diet, activities, and symptoms to help identify triggers that seem to cause symptoms to flare - for example, certain foods, hormonal changes (some women report more IBS symptoms during their menstrual period), or specific stress and anxiety-producing situations.
Heat treatment with, hot-water bottles, hot packs or electric blankets can help relieve the symptoms.
