There are many causes for back pain (BP), so as usual it is very important to establish whether the problem is muscular, spinal or nervous in origin or caused by a disharmony of the internal organs. Usually there will have been investigations by a GP involving x-rays to rule out if surgery is needed. However if the problem is caused by strained or weak muscles including sciatica, TCM treatment using acupuncture or herbs can be very effective.
Acupuncture including massage or manipulation can be used to promote the flow of Qi in the affected area. This is supported using creams, ointments or plasters. Obviously exercise is very important in strengthening and stretching the back muscles. There are several categories of herbs that can be useful to help the circulation, relieve pain and support the muscles involved. For example Chinese ginseng root, teasel root and acanthopanax bark are used to help relieve pain.
