Research by Ohio University found that “rowers use twice the number of calories on a 2,000 meter course as runners on a 3,000 meter steeplechase course, considered the most rigorous running event.” Translate this into actual calorie figures and you get the following:

Light to moderate rowing burns 502 to 733 calories per hour

Vigorous rowing burns 709 to 1,035 per hour
