Bladder Problems

Bladder, in this instance relates to the urinary bladder, as opposed to the gall bladder. The most commonly reported bladder problem, particularly for women is Cystitis. Cystitis in TCM is attributed to a combination of heat and dampness. It is this heat and dampness that is responsible for the burning sensation that is associated with this complaint. When treating this condition, it is important to identify how the dampness and heat have become accumulated in the bladder.

Dampness can accumulate through being exposed over long periods to a damp environment, for example living in a damp flat. Dampness can also be produced by the over consumption of foods that are sticky and heavy to digest. That would translate also into a high fatty content. This puts a strain on the digestive system making dampness accumulate and the nature of dampness is to sink downwards in the body, hence moving from the digestive system, downwards, towards the bladder. This in itself can cause an obstruction to the flow of energy in the bladder, hence allowing heat to accumulate. Other ways of heat accumulating is through consumption of excessive alcohol or hot spicy foods. Thirdly, accumulation of pent up emotions that are not expressed. The combination of the heat and dampness obstruct the normal flow of urine from the bladder thus making it difficult to have the usual clear and easy flow of passing urine. The tongue of such a person will normally be a red tongue body with a particularly thick yellow tongue coating towards the rear of the tongue. Treatment would involve using herbs that would clear heat and resolve dampness. A remedy called Plantain that is actually a persistent little weed, which flourishes in the lawn and at every grass verge in the country, usually called 'Ponies Tails' by children. Either the whole grass or the seed can be used. The fresh plant is particularly effective. Half a kilogram, washed and cleaned and cooked for a few minutes with the water resulting drunk regularly as a tea will help control attacks and ease the discomfort. Acupuncture treatment for this complaint will involve using points on the urinary bladder channel that will clear heat and dampness and regulate the normal functioning of the bladder. Here endeth the chapter on bladder problems.
